Music

This is may be my second favorite hobby. I like many many kinds of music and yet I don't really know anything about it. I just always have something on and hardly ever the radio. I think you'd raise your eyebrows if I told you some of the artists I listen to because you've probably never heard of most of them. The few types of music I don't really listen to are rap, pop, and country/tejano. I know, I know...how can I live in Texas and not like country? Well, if I'm in the right mood, say....out fishing on a quiet, hot, sunny afternoon on a still river, with a cold one in hand...OK, I can listen to some of it. Rap and Pop though, no, not really me at all. I'm way more into rock or even other culture style music, world music, an instrumental Latino maybe or bagpipes or African or something of that nature. Weird mix, hunh?

I have a few friends who are excellent guitarists or musicians although they don't all think so and I love to talk about various nuances of different artists. I'm also drawn in really hard by the right lyrics and Dave Matthews Band probably tops this list for me or maybe the Jojes. I've only met one other person ever who hears music the way I do, that's my most cherished friend, Martien of the Jojes.  We can listen for literally hours to songs, never saying a word, and we both really HEAR the lyrics, you know?

But here's some you might not be familiar with that I really like. These links mostly take you directly to a page that has music clips, not necessarily the home or index page for that site, so be sure to go back to the home page to find out more about these artists:

Dave Matthews Band - This band magnetizes me. Their music has the most intriguing shifts of rhythm...trust me, you have to listen to the cd's a few times all the way through (you know these kind, make yourself do it) and then you begin to hear things you never heard before....each time something new. And the lyrics......

Pedro Abrunhosa - A Portuguese artist whose music I love but cannot find here (in Austin....so far).   Paulo brought me back one of his CD's from his last visit to Portugal and it's wayyyyyy cool!  Check out some music clips at this site.

Marco Borsato - Have you heard of him?  He's verrrry popular in Europe, being half Italian and half Dutch.  He lives in the Netherlands and his songs are really wonderful.  And sorry, this page is in Dutch of course, LEARN IT, it's very very close to English.

Ottmar Leibert - hmmm, german name, flamenco guitar...go see for yourself!

Storyville - This was an Austin band, broken up now I'm sorry to say.  Their singer is self-taught I think and you'll be really amazed by his voice.  The bass player is Tommy Shannon who played with the great Stevie Ray V.

Carry You Home (OK, I gave up trying to find this so I did it myself and, yes, it's giant, 978k .wav but really it's worth it. If this doesn't give you chills, something's wrong...wait, isn't that a K's Choice song, haha!)

Ian Moore - A Texas artist who might remind you a little of Stevie Ray V.

Shawn Mullins - wow...that's the best word I can think of for this guyI especially like his accoustic versions of songs.  He is a proudly independent artist from Georgia.

Shake Russell - another Texas artist.   I first heard him live with Dana Cooper wayyyy back in the early 80's at a small auditorium at the University of Houston Clear Lake and I was blown away.

There will be, of course, much much more added to this page as I have time so keep checking back for progress. Thanks.
